What Questions Should I Ask My Mesothelioma Doctor?
Ask your doctor about the specific type and stage of your mesothelioma, all available treatment options, clinical trial eligibility, expected side effects, how treatment will affect your daily life, and the goals of each treatment. Bring a written list and consider having a family member take notes.
Questions About Your Diagnosis
Start by ensuring you fully understand your specific diagnosis. Ask: What type of mesothelioma do I have (pleural, peritoneal, pericardial)? What is the cell type (epithelioid, sarcomatoid, biphasic)? What is the stage? How confident is the pathology — should the tissue samples be reviewed by a mesothelioma specialist pathologist? According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, understanding your specific diagnosis is the foundation for every treatment decision.
Also ask: Has the cancer spread beyond where it started? What additional tests or scans are needed before treatment can begin? Are there any genetic or molecular features of my tumor that could affect treatment choices?
Questions About Treatment
Ask about all available treatment options, not just the one your doctor recommends first. Important questions include: What treatment do you recommend and why? Am I a candidate for surgery? What chemotherapy or immunotherapy regimen would you use? Is radiation appropriate for my case? Am I eligible for any clinical trials?
For each option, ask: What is the goal of this treatment — cure, life extension, or symptom relief? What are the expected benefits? What are the possible side effects and how are they managed? How long will treatment take? How will it affect my ability to work and carry on normal activities?
Questions About Your Care Team
Ask about the team that will be involved in your care: Who will coordinate my treatment? Will my case be discussed at a tumor board? How many mesothelioma patients has this team treated? What support services are available (nutritionist, social worker, palliative care, counseling)?
Logistical questions are important too: How often will I need to come in for appointments? What happens if I experience side effects between visits? Is there a 24-hour number I can call? Can any treatment be coordinated with doctors closer to my home?
Preparing for Your Appointment
Write your questions down before the appointment and bring them with you. Consider bringing a family member or friend to take notes — it is difficult to absorb complex medical information, especially when you are processing an emotional diagnosis. Ask if you can record the conversation for later review.
Do not hesitate to ask your doctor to explain anything you do not understand. Also ask whether you should consult with a mesothelioma attorney about your legal rights, as asbestos exposure claims have time-sensitive deadlines.
