History & Asbestos Use
Originally built by Roxana Petroleum Company in 1918, the refinery was later acquired by Shell Oil before becoming part of a ConocoPhillips and Cenovus Energy joint venture. The facility grew to process over 300,000 barrels per day, making it one of the largest refineries in the Midwest. Asbestos was integral to the refinery infrastructure from the 1920s through the late 1970s, used in insulation, gaskets, and fireproofing materials across all process units.
