History & Asbestos Use
The Indiana Harbor Works originated as Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's facility before becoming part of LTV Steel through a series of mergers in the 1970s and 1980s. The plant operated blast furnaces, coke ovens, and rolling mills that all relied on asbestos insulation for high-temperature operations. LTV Steel filed for bankruptcy in 2000, and the facility was eventually acquired by what is now Cleveland-Cliffs.
