History & Asbestos Use
GAF Corporation, formerly General Aniline & Film, operated a large building materials manufacturing plant in Wayne, New Jersey. The facility produced asbestos-containing roofing shingles, siding, felt, and vinyl-asbestos floor tiles that were widely distributed across the United States. GAF was one of the top producers of asbestos roofing products in the country during the mid-20th century. The company faced thousands of asbestos personal injury lawsuits and eventually established a trust fund to compensate victims as part of its bankruptcy proceedings.
