History & Asbestos Use
Shell Oil established the Deer Park manufacturing complex in 1929, and it grew to become one of the largest refining and chemical operations in the world with capacity exceeding 340,000 barrels per day. The site includes both a refinery and a major chemical plant, both of which relied on asbestos-containing insulation and components from the 1930s through the early 1980s. Pemex acquired the refinery portion from Shell in 2022, though the asbestos legacy spans the Shell era.
