Overview

The W.R. Grace Trust compensates victims of asbestos exposure from W.R. Grace products, particularly Zonolite vermiculite insulation and Monokote fireproofing. W.R. Grace operated the vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana, which was contaminated with tremolite asbestos and caused widespread illness in the town and among workers who processed the vermiculite at facilities across the country.

History & Background

W.R. Grace & Co. purchased the Libby, Montana vermiculite mine in 1963 and operated it until 1990. The vermiculite ore was contaminated with tremolite asbestos, a particularly toxic form of asbestos. Workers at the mine and at over 200 processing sites across the country were exposed, as were residents of Libby due to airborne contamination. The EPA declared Libby a Superfund site in 2002, and the town experienced some of the highest rates of asbestos-related disease in the nation. Zonolite insulation, made from Libby vermiculite, was installed in an estimated 35 million American homes. Monokote fireproofing was sprayed in thousands of commercial buildings.
