So Joe's oncologist was walking us through his exposure history last month and it got me thinking about this. We know he worked around it back in the 70s and 80s but I kept wondering if companies are still using the stuff now and I just didn't know it.
Turns out it's not totally banned in the US like I thought. They restricted it but there's still asbestos in some insulation, brake pads, roofing materials, all kinds of things. Other countries banned it completely but we're still kinda halfway there which honestly makes me mad when I think about people still getting exposed without even knowing it.
I was a teacher for 32 years and we had old school buildings with asbestos in the ceiling tiles and pipes. We weren't even told about it half the time. So yeah it's still out there and people are still breathing it in and won't know for decades that they got sick from it.
Has anyone else found out their exposure was more recent than they thought, or are most of you dealing with older workplace stuff like Joe?
